There is no ranking inside ChatGPT. There is no position three, no page two, no leaderboard you can climb. There is one written answer with room for a handful of names in it, and your job is to be one of them. That is what “ChatGPT SEO” actually means, and it is a narrower target than the phrase suggests.

The work behind it is concrete, though, and most of it is verifiable rather than speculative. OpenAI publishes which crawler decides whether your site can be surfaced in a ChatGPT answer at all. Independent studies point to where its retrieval tends to look. Below is what is documented, what is inferred, and the six steps that follow from both.

What does it mean to “rank” in ChatGPT?

It means being named in the composed answer when someone asks a question in your category without mentioning your company. There is no ordered list to place in. ChatGPT writes a short answer, often naming three to five businesses, sometimes one. You are either inside that paragraph or absent from it.

That distinction changes what you optimize for. In Google, being tenth still puts you on the page, still earns some clicks, still gives a motivated searcher the chance to find you. In a ChatGPT answer there is no tenth. The model composes a shortlist and the user reads it as the complete set of reasonable options.

It also changes how you measure success, because the answer is not stable. Ask the same question twice and you can get two different sets of names. So “did I rank” is the wrong question. “How often do I appear across repeated asks” is the right one, which is why we treat measurement as a trend in how to measure AI visibility.

The scale is what makes this worth the effort at all. OpenAI announced ChatGPT had reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, reported by TechCrunch. Not all of them ask for supplier recommendations. Enough of them do that the paragraph is now real estate.

What has to be true before ChatGPT will name you?

For current, local or specific questions, ChatGPT runs a web search and builds its answer from pages it retrieves. So being named depends on a chain: its search crawler can reach your site, your pages sit in the index its retrieval draws on, and your content contains facts clear enough to lift and attribute.

Break that chain anywhere and the rest is wasted. A blocked crawler makes excellent content invisible. A crawlable, well-indexed page full of “bespoke solutions tailored to your needs” gives the model nothing to quote. Both failures look identical from the outside: silence.

The chain also explains why this is not purely a content problem or purely a technical one. Most businesses we look at have one broken link in it, not five. In our own pilot audit, a business with a working site and real reviews was absent from eight out of ten general questions a prospect would actually ask, while being described accurately whenever asked about by name. If that pattern sounds familiar, the diagnosis lives in why ChatGPT doesn’t recommend your business; this post is the prescription.

Which crawler actually decides whether you appear?

OAI-SearchBot does, and this is the single most misunderstood point in ChatGPT SEO. OpenAI operates four separate user agents with independent robots.txt controls. Many sites blocked GPTBot in 2023 to opt out of AI training and assume they are therefore invisible in ChatGPT. They are not — different bot, different setting.

OpenAI’s crawler documentation is explicit about the separation: “Each setting is independent of the others – for example, a webmaster can allow OAI-SearchBot in order to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot to indicate that crawled content should not be used for training OpenAI’s generative AI foundation models.”

User agent What it controls What blocking it does
OAI-SearchBot Whether your pages can be surfaced in ChatGPT search answers Sites opted out “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links”
GPTBot Whether your content is used to develop OpenAI’s foundation models Signals your content should not train models. Does not remove you from ChatGPT search
ChatGPT-User Live fetches triggered by a user action inside ChatGPT OpenAI states it “is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search”
OAI-AdsBot Safety validation of pages submitted as ChatGPT ads Affects advertising eligibility only; its data is “not used to train generative AI foundation models”

This gives you a genuine choice rather than an all-or-nothing decision. If you object to your writing training a commercial model but want customers to find you, allow OAI-SearchBot and disallow GPTBot. That is the configuration OpenAI itself describes.

One practical note from the same documentation: “For search results, please note it can take ~24 hours from a site’s robots.txt update for our systems to adjust.” So a fix here shows up quickly by SEO standards — but check your file first, because you cannot tell from the outside whether this is your problem.

Does Bing indexation matter for ChatGPT visibility?

Probably yes, and this is where English-language ChatGPT SEO diverges most sharply from the single-engine advice common in smaller markets. OpenAI does not publicly document which index its retrieval draws on. Independent research consistently finds ChatGPT’s citations line up far better with Bing’s results than with Google’s.

The most-cited measurement comes from Seer Interactive, which compared over 500 ChatGPT citations across 100 search-triggering queries against both engines’ top results. Bing matched 87% of the time; Google matched 56%. A later Search Engine Land case study by Molly Nogami and Ben Tannenbaum ran a single hotel-recommendation prompt 68 times and reached the same conclusion for that category: winning the Bing results for the model’s follow-up queries tracked with being mentioned, while winning Google’s did not.

Two honest caveats. Both are third-party observations of correlation, not OpenAI describing its own architecture, and retrieval arrangements have changed more than once. And a sample of one prompt in one vertical, however many times repeated, is a signal rather than a law.

Even discounted for that, the practical instruction is cheap enough to be worth following: do not let Bing be an afterthought. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and check that your commercial pages are actually indexed there — not just in Google. IndexNow is a free protocol that pings participating engines when you publish or update a page, and most CMS platforms have a plugin for it. This is an afternoon of work, not a project.

Google’s side of the ledger is simpler. Its AI optimization guide, published May 2026, states that optimizing for generative AI features is “still SEO,” and that pages must be indexed and eligible for snippets before they can appear in those features at all. Same underlying requirement, different index.

Six steps to get ChatGPT to name your business

Work these in order. The sequence is deliberate: each step is wasted effort if the one above it is broken. Steps one and two are technical and fast. Steps three to six are the ones that decide whether you get named once the machinery works.

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for any rule blocking it, including blanket AI-bot blocks copied from a template. Decide GPTBot separately on its own merits — training and search are unrelated settings.
  2. Get indexed where retrieval looks. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console, submit sitemaps to both, and confirm your money pages are indexed rather than assuming they are. Add IndexNow if your platform supports it.
  3. Put quotable facts in plain text. Prices or ranges, service areas, turnaround times, what you do and for whom. A model can cite “from PLN 250, callout within 24 hours.” It cannot cite “individual quote” or a price locked inside an image or PDF.
  4. Structure key pages answer-first. Make the heading the exact question a customer asks, answer it directly in the first two sentences, then expand. This gives the model a clean, self-contained passage to lift and attribute rather than a paragraph it has to reassemble.
  5. Make your business facts identical everywhere. One legal name, one address, one phone number, one service list, across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, industry directories and social profiles. Conflicting facts lower a model’s confidence, and low confidence gets resolved in favour of a competitor with a consistent story.
  6. Build third-party evidence. Recent, specific reviews and mentions on sources the model already reads act roughly the way links act in classic SEO: outside confirmation that you exist and are worth naming. For a shop or service area this is the highest-leverage step of the six, and we cover the local specifics in AI visibility for small and local businesses.

Notice what is absent: no special file, no AI-specific markup, no trick. If you want the same ground covered across all the assistants rather than ChatGPT alone, the broader version is how to optimize your website for AI search. If you are wondering whether llms.txt belongs on this list, the short answer is not yet, and the long one is in what is llms.txt, and do you actually need it.

Can you pay your way into a ChatGPT answer?

Not into the answer itself. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT for US users on Free and Go tiers in February 2026, reported by TechCrunch. OpenAI states the ads “will always be clearly labeled as sponsored and separated from the organic content” and that “ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you.”

So a paid slot now exists next to the answer, but the recommendation itself remains earned. That is a meaningful distinction for a smaller business: the names inside the paragraph are still decided by readability, consistency and trust signals rather than budget. Doing honest work and packaging it in a machine-readable way is still the whole game.

Treat ads as a separate channel with its own economics, the way you would treat Google Ads against organic search. It does not replace the six steps above, and the six steps do not become less valuable because a sponsored slot appeared beside them.

How do I know whether any of this worked?

Measure a baseline before you change anything, then re-check the same prompts on the same schedule. Ask the questions your customers actually ask, once with your company name and once without, in a fresh session. Log whether you appeared, where in the answer, and who was named instead.

Because answers vary between sessions, a single check tells you almost nothing. Run each prompt several times and count how often you appear. That frequency is the number to track, and the step-by-step method with ready-made prompts is in how to check if AI recommends your business.

Set expectations honestly on timing. Crawler-access fixes can register within about a day for ChatGPT search, per OpenAI’s own note. Indexation takes longer. Reviews and mentions build over months. Nobody can promise you a position, in ChatGPT or anywhere else, and any guide that gives you a date is guessing. What you can control is whether the signals exist at all.

If you would rather have this scored rather than guessed at, that is what our AI visibility audit does: 39 criteria across six areas, the same customer questions asked of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, and a prioritized fix list in a PDF. It starts at PLN 499 net (around $125), with a full refund if we cannot find at least five things worth fixing. Not sure it applies to you yet? A free 20-minute consultation will tell you straight, including when the answer is “not yet.” Or start wider with the free 3-minute marketing audit.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT SEO different from regular SEO? The foundation is shared: crawlable pages, specific content, consistent business facts. Two things differ. The technical layer involves different user agents (OAI-SearchBot rather than Googlebot), and the format that gets quoted is tighter — short, self-contained answers rather than long descriptive prose. We draw the full line between the two in AI visibility vs SEO.

I blocked GPTBot years ago. Am I invisible in ChatGPT? Not necessarily. OpenAI’s documentation states that search inclusion is governed by OAI-SearchBot, and that the settings are independent. Blocking GPTBot opts you out of model training, not out of ChatGPT search answers. Check your robots.txt for both, and be especially wary of blanket “block all AI bots” rules that catch the search crawler too.

Do I need to rank in Bing to appear in ChatGPT? Nobody outside OpenAI can state this as a rule. Independent research, notably Seer Interactive’s comparison of 500+ citations, finds ChatGPT’s citations align with Bing’s top results far more often than with Google’s. That makes Bing indexation a cheap, sensible bet rather than a guarantee. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and confirm your key pages are indexed there.

How many businesses does ChatGPT name in a typical recommendation? Usually a handful — often three to five, sometimes one. That is the constraint that makes this different from Google, where a page of results leaves room for a motivated searcher to scroll and find you. Here the shortlist is effectively the entire consideration set, so absence from it is absence from the decision.

Does ChatGPT Plus pick different sources than the free version? The retrieval mechanism is the same across tiers; the paid plans differ mainly in usage limits and model access. One documented difference from February 2026 is advertising: ads appear for Free and Go users in the US test, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free. That affects what surrounds the answer, not how the answer selects its sources.
